Was / Were
|:---|:---|:---|:---|
| **I, He, She, It** | *He was a brave batyr.* | *She wasn't afraid.* | *Was the castle big?* |
| **We, You, They** | *They were great warriors.* | *We weren't at home.* | *Were they in the forest?* |
(Time markers):
- **yesterday** [ˈjestədeɪ] — вчера
- **last week / last year** — на прошлой неделе / в прошлом году
- **ago** (two days ago, many centuries ago) — назад
- **in 1991 / in ancient times** — в 1991 году / в древние времена
Вопросы с Was / Were не требуют Did!
Was и Were сами являются сильными вспомогательными глаголами: "Were you happy?" (НЕ "Did you be happy?").
- live lived
- protect protected
- battle battled
- *walked* [wɔːkt], *helped* [helpt], *watched* [wɒtʃt].
- *lived* [lɪvd], *played* [pleɪd], *opened* [ˈəʊpənd].
- *started* [ˈstɑːtɪd], *wanted* [ˈwɒntɪd], *decided* [dɪˈsaɪdɪd].
*Many centuries ago, there was a magnificent high poplar tree named Baiterek on the bank of the World River. Every year, the sacred bird Samruk flew to the top and laid a shining golden egg — the Sun. But down at the roots, the evil dragon Aydakhar lived in the underworld and wanted to steal the egg. A brave batyr defeated the dragon and brought peace to the steppe.*
